Introduction to SEO
Ok, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. What the heck is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.
This is the way that your website is found on Google, Bing or any other search engine.
It uses keywords as well as other components to find your website out of all the million other sites on the world wide web.
So why should you care about any of this? Well if you have an online business or blog search engine optimization is vital because without it no one will ever see your site. So let me tell you a few tips and tricks that will boost your traffic and get your website in front of your dream audience.
Install an SEO Plugin
The number one tip I have for you is to download a high-quality Search Engine Optimization plugin. I highly recommend that you download Yoast for many reasons. Yoast is very user-friendly and is free to use for basic features. If you want to upgrade to premium it’s still quite affordable for all the information and assistance you’ll receive.
The WordPress plugin allows you to do so many useful things and makes it super simple. This plugin appears on whatever page/post you are editing and will tell you exactly what you need to change and even shows you how. Once you get the green light (literally) on your post you know that it is ready to go.
With this plugin you can:
- Create an XML Sitemap
- Modify whether your categories and tags are crawlable
- Verify social media accounts for optimum exposure
- Install breadcrumbs
Add Meta Titles and Descriptions
With the WordPress Yoast Plugin, it also will allow you to modify meta titles and descriptions. According to Google “Title tags and meta descriptions are bits of HTML code in the header of a web page. They help search engines understand the content on a page”.
Google will automatically capture the title and the first few sentences of a page or post and display it in its search result. This means that the title and the description are very important because it will be used to find your page or post.
The first thing that you want to do is to decide on a strong keyword or keyphrase that relates to your post. For example, if your blog post is about making raspberry jam then your keyphrase should be something like “how to make raspberry jam”. Then you want to use that same keyphrase as your focus keyphrase on the blog post and also use it within the post a maximum of three times.
If you want to research keywords to use I suggest using Keywordtool.io. This is a great place to find strong keywords and/or key phrases to use as your meta title and in your meta description.
Next, you want to make a short description that describes what the blog post is about. You should keep this description length to one-two sentences long for the best results.
Add Internal & External Links
One way to prove to Google that your site is trustworthy is by using internal and external links. An internal link is a clickable word or words that link one page or post on your site to another. An external link is a clickable word or words that link your page or post to another website. It shows Google that you are communicating with other websites and other pages within your website and it helps to boost your own searchability.
This step is fairly easy, all you have to do is copy your page link or an external page link and paste it to a specific word in your post.
In this example, “lazy dog” will become the clickable link. All you have to do is highlight the words you want to use, click the icon that looks like a chain link and paste the link there. Click apply and you’re done! Your link will appear in a different color from the rest of the text and it will be underlined.
Edit Image ALT Tags
Image ALT Tags or Image Title Attribute is the written copy that appears in place of an image. Google cannot read images so an ALT Tag is a quick way for Google to be able to tell what the picture is about and its use on your website.
To edit your ATL tags simply add a description of the picture when you upload it to your website. This will help boost your search-ability and help you to rank higher on Google search.
