How to Start a Blog
First, I would like to tell you why I started this blog with my friend Lashanda. Ebony Creative is a mix of all our interests and passions as well as a healthy outlet. I love to write and help others so we created this blog to share our experiences to hopefully help others along the way. To learn more about us click here.
Find Your Why
In order to have a successful blog, you have to have a reason for doing it. Are you a busy mom who wants to use your new blog as an outlet? Are you a tech guru who wants to share your talents with the world? Whatever the reason for starting your blog make sure that it is something you are passionate about. It will take lots of work to make your blog a success so having an anchor behind all of your efforts will keep you dedicated. So, what’s your why?
Find a Niche That Interest You
The best way to figure out what niche you should choose is to write a list of all your passions and skills. Once you have made your list the next step is to narrow it down to 2-3 things you are most passionate about. Start a blog that is a unique representation of your personality.
Keep in mind that you do not have to keep your topics within this range, but it will make your blog more cohesive if you keep the topics to a minimum.
This will make it easier to find topics to write about and give your readers a better understanding of your passions and goals. Having this understanding beforehand will help you start a blog that is cohesive and perfect for your readers.
Here is a shortlist of blog niches to choose from:
- Lifestyle Blog
- Travel Blog
- Food Blog
- Mom Blog
- Business Blog
- Tech Blog
- DIY Blog
- Fitness Blog
- Beauty Blog
- Fashion Blog
- Christian or Religious Blog
Once you have decided on your niche it is important to do research on that blog topic so that you can provide accurate information on it. The next step is to write a list of relevant topics to fill up your blog with.
Find a few blogs in your niche and use their blog to inspire you. Do not copy someone else blog or blog post. Simply use their blog to guide you in the right direction. This will help get your juices flowing and make it easier to come up with ideas.
Choose a Domain Name
After you have narrowed down your niche, and done thorough research on it the next step is to decide on a name. Deciding on a blog name can be the hardest part of starting a blog. Here are a few things to think about when choosing a name for your blog.
- Choose a name that is easy to spell and say.
- Choose a name that is memorable and leaves a lasting impression.
- Choose something fun and witty.
- Choose a name that describes your blog in a few words.
- Choose a name that is unique to only your blog.
- Once you come up with your name you should snag it quick.
After you decide on a name that you love, you can check and see if the domain is available. You can use any of the services in the next section to look up your domain and see if it is available. Keep in mind that most hosting services come with a free domain.
Keep in mind that we may receive a commission when you click our links and make purchases. However, this does not impact our reviews and comparisons. We try our best to keep things fair and balanced, in order to help you make the best choice for you.
A web host, or web hosting service provider, is a business that provides the technologies and services needed for the website or webpage to be viewed on the Internet. These are the hosting services that I recommend and have used myself.
These options offer the ability to get started at a low cost to you. If you are looking for a longterm commitment you can also pay annually.
The annual option allows you to save the most but the choice is totally up to you. Let’s go over the three options separately so that you can get a better idea of what will work for you.

As you can see the features of each company is very similar. You should do a little more research on each of these company to see which one is right for you.
Once you have decided on which hosting company you will purchase from you can now search and see if your domain is available. If it is available you can go ahead and purchase the hosting. Most hosting will come with a domain, but make sure before purchasing.
Design your Website
Now its time for the fun part, designing your site. The great thing about this is that it can be as complex or as simple as you would like. I recommend starting out simple and then adding more as you go. The easiest way to make your blog cute and functional is to install a WordPress friendly theme.
You can find many free or low cost themes directly in the theme section of your WordPress admin site. You can choose a beautiful theme and begin adding content immediately. Some of the best themes are Divi, Elementor and Make. All of these themes have free options but you can also upgrade to more features for a fee.
Bluchic is one of my favorite theme providers. They create beautiful, feminine themes for WordPress. This is a great option for bloggers, online store owners or service providers. For more theme options check out this blog post.
Once you have selected a theme, now it’s time to start planning your content. Decide how often you want to post to your blog and make a schedule. I like to try and post at least once a week to keep a good flow of content on my blog. When you first start a blog you are not going to have loads of content right away but pace yourself and add as much content as you can.
I suggest posting anywhere from three to five times a week, but there is no limit in how often you post. This helps to build a “library” of content for my readers.
Whatever schedule you choose try to stick to your schedule because your audience will begin to expect your post and you don’t won’t to let them down.
YASS! You just created your own blog, now it’s time to get to writing.
I hope that my tips help you to create a fun and unique blog that your audience will love.
