My Etsy Journey | How to Start an Etsy Shop
After the birth of my son in 2014 I decided to quit my job and become a stay at home mom. I wanted to find legit ways to supplement my income while also staying at home with my son. I just couldn’t bear the thought of leaving my son in daycare at such a young age.
I tried many different options to make money at home but most of them were scams or just required too much work for too little pay. I decided to open a Etsy shop to sell teething necklaces and baby accessories.
I soon learned that there was a lot more to selling online that simply listing your items and waiting for sales. There’s a lot of work that goes into selling on Etsy that I had no clue about.
Today I will be telling you how to start successful Etsy shop . These are some of the things I have learned through trial and error so that hopefully you can avoid many of the mistakes I made.

Do Your Research
One of the first things you should do when deciding to open an Etsy shop is to do thorough research. Before you even think about creating your first item you should research the types of products you are selling.
Find out if there are any requirements for your product, for example, if you want to sell teething necklaces you should find out about safety regulations required to legally sell that product.
This is the reason why my first shop failed. I was unaware of the safety regulations and requirements to sell teething necklaces and the cost to come up to code was way more than what I was willing to pay. I closed that shop around the end of 2016 and went back to the drawing board.
If you are selling items that do not require any types of licensing or certifications then that will make it easier to sell without any problems. You also want to research and find out how popular or saturated the market you will be selling in will be.
For example, if you want to sell jewelry, this is a saturated market where it may be harder to sell. Research is also vital when it comes to pricing your items. It’s great to know how much your competitors are charging so that you can competitively price your item.
Google Trends- use this tool to find out if your products are trendy or if they fall into a saturated market category. You can also use Google trends to find a new product to sell.
Take Great Photos
If you want to start succesful Etsy shop you will need great photos to grab the attentiions of your potential customers. Once you have done your research on the product you are going to be selling the next thing you need to do is take photos.
The best photos are taken with natural light. You should use a clean white background with natural lighting to really make your product really stand out.
Having a great photo of your product is very important because it is the first impression you make. If your photos are dark or unfocused it makes it harder for the customer to get an idea of what they are buying. If you are unable to find natural lighting, I recommend using a light box to brighten up your photos.
These lighting boxes are definitely worth the investment and they are not that expensive. I purchased one from Amazon and it really helps to brighten up my photos when I don’t have a lot of natural lighting in my house.
Another option is to use digital apps to edit your images. One of my favorite tools to edit images is Light Room by Adobe. This is an app that you can use on the go to edit pictures to make sure they are perfect for your listings.
Stock Your Shop
Now that you have researched your product and taken great photos of it, its time to add the items to your shop. To start a succesful Etsy shop you will need to stock your shop with lots of listings as soon as possible. I recommend starting with 20-40 listings. Yes, you read that right.
How many times have you visited a store only to leave minutes later because they didn’t have enough variety? That’s exactly why you want to make sure you give your customers lots to choose from.
The more items you have listed in your shop, the higher the chance that your customer will find something that they love. Once you’ve fully stocked your shop, lets move to the most important step.
This is the big bad word everyone is afraid of, SEO, is the most important step in having a successful shop. Once you have conquered SEO, you will be able to sell more items than you ever could have imagined.
This is the number one reason why people fail when they open a etsy shop, because they know nothing about SEO and simply leave it out. That’s a huge no-no because Etsy loves products that are SEO friendly. If you want to start a succesful Etsy shop SEO is just something you will have to get the hang of.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for search engine optimization. Basically, its the way you get found on Google, Etsy or any online search engine. Think of Etsy as a Google for shopping handmade. How are you going to find the item you want if you don’t search for it.
The first step to figuring out SEO is to figure out what words your customers are using to find products like yours. You will use titles and tags as well as a good description to make your product visible to your audience. Lets just say you have an scarf you want to list on your Etsy shop.
The first thing you need to do is figure out what words customers type when looking for scarves. The easiest way to figure this out is to go straight to the source.
Go to Etsy and type in scarf in the search bar. You might see things like scarf for women, or infinity scarves. This will help you know what tags to use for your product.
On your listing you will have 13 tags to identify what type of product it is. You will need to use all 13 tags to make your listing as searchable as possible.
If you have reached this step then you are well on your way to having a successful Etsy shop. One final tip I have is for you to get personal with your customers.
Tell your story and let everyone know the inspiration behind your shop. This information helps the customer feel like they are buying from their friend instead of some huge business and that’s what people like about shopping Etsy.
