What is Google Analytics and Why do You Need it?
Google Analytics allows you to track and understand your visitor’s behavior, what they’re looking for, and whether your business is addressing their needs. It allows you to use its technology to dissect and study your online business so you can cater well to your visitors.
If you are starting a new blog it’s very important to be able to see and understand these analytics so that you know what content resonates with your readers and what you should leave out. I will show you step by step how to connect Google Analytics to WordPress.
Create a Google Account or Sign-in to Existing Account
To get started, navigate to the Google Analytics Website and click Start for Free in the top right-hand corner.
Next, you will need to login to your Google account or create a new account.
After signing up or logging in you need to sign up for Google Analytics. To do this just click the Sign-Up button.
Next, you will need to enter the settings for the new website you are settings up. Make sure to select the “web” option and not the other two options.
Now you should scroll down to the bottom and enter a name for your Google Analytics account, your URL, as well any other information requested.
Next, you can edit your data sharing settings. At the bottom, click Get Tracking ID. You must read and accept the terms before continuing.
Google Analytics is now set up and ready to go! Now we will Install and Activate MonsterInsights and connect it to Google Analytics.
Set up MonsterInsights
Monster Insights is a free plugin that connects your Google Analytics directly to your WordPress Dashboard so that you can view your stats at quickly and easily. Login to your admin dashboard on WordPress
Navigate to Plugin > Add New
Search for MonsterInsights, Install and Activate it.
After the plugin is activated the setup wizard will start and prompt you to enter some information.
First, you need to select the category that best describes your site, Save and Continue.
On the next page, it will ask for a license key, but since we’re using the free version you can skip this step. Scroll to the bottom and select Connect MonsterInsights.
Once you click that button it will take you to a Google login page. Login to your Google account.
You have to allow Google to connect with MonsterInsights before continuing.
Next, you will select which website you want to connect, select the desired website destination and click Complete Connection.
Next, you will see the recommended settings. I suggest you keep all of the settings the same. Select Save and Continue.
You will see some suggested add ons. You can choose to add them or skip to the next step.
Finally select Finish Setup & Exit Wizard.
